Breaking Android Episode 005

BreakingModern – Welcome to the latest episode of Breaking Android. I’m your host, Mat Lee. This week on the show, I’m covering the new YouTube for Android redesign, Android battery saving news and a way to unlock your Chromebook with an Android Lollipop phone. Watch the show below and scroll below the fold for all the show notes.

Breaking Android Broken Down

Wi-Fi Battery Drain?

Does turning off Wi-Fi save battery? Android Central is saying not really. If you’re using any of the newer generation devices, it says you should keep the Wi-Fi on most of the time. This seems counterintuitive to what we’ve been doing. But, of course, this depends on your usage.

YouTube Material Design

The long-awaited material design refresh for the YouTube app is finally here. For most of us, at least. Of course, if you haven’t gotten it yet and want it, Android Police has a link to a cryptographically-signed apk. That means you know it’s legit. Most of you probably want to just wait for the update to come in Google Play.

Unlock Chromebook with Android

Last up we have a cool article from Computerworld that talks about how, sometime in the near future, we’ll be able to keep our Chromebooks unlocked with our Android phones. Those phones need to be running Android 5.0 Lollipop. This was first mentioned back at Google IO 2014, but we haven’t heard much about it since. Apparently it’s been in Android 5 this whole time, but it wasn’t ready on the Chrome side. It is now, at least for those using the Dev channel of Chrome. It might still be buggy, so if you’re sensitive to that sort of stuff, you might just want to wait.

That’s going to do it for this episode of Breaking Android. Follow me on your favorite social network and say hello. Also make sure to check out our weekly Android long-form podcast over at AttackoftheAndroids.com.
