Breaking Android Episode 008

BreakingModern – Welcome to the latest episode of Breaking Android. I’m your host, Mat Lee. This week on the show, I’m talking about the Google Earth API shutdown, Disney World’s support for Google Wallet, the Sony hack and lots of other Android news. Watch the show below and scroll below the fold for show notes.

Breaking Android Broken Down

Google Earth API

From the Google Geo Developers blog, an announcement has come out that the Google Earth API will be shut down. As per Google’s deprecation policy, the API will remain active for one year, giving it a retire date of December 12th, 2015. This is probably a good thing, because, as they state on the blog, the Google Earth API is built on NPAPI plugin framework, which has recently been discovered to have some security issues.

Mobile Payment

Next up, do you like paying for stuff with your phone? I do, but there’s only a couple of places that accept it in my area. With Apple Pay now in the mainstream, more places are starting to accept NFC mobile payments, and with it, Google Wallet. The latest of these is Walt Disney World. Phandroid is reporting that it’s really because of Apple Pay getting incorporated there, but because Google Wallet works with those same terminals, it’s accepted by default. It’s good news if you’ve been waiting to pay for your Walt Disney World vacation with your Google Wallet monies.

The Interview

Lastly, in the never-ending struggle between Hollywood and the Internet in regards to movie piracy, it seems even after The Interview made five times more money online than it did in the theaters, Hollywood still isn’t happy. Based on some leaked emails from the recent Sony hack, lawyers from the MPAA and a bunch of major movie studios blame Google for creating problems in piracy.
