Celebrity Rants: Good and Bad

BreakingModern — Celebrities today hold the power to influence the world and promote just about anything. And let’s face it; it’s not uncommon for celebrities to use social media to talk about issues going on in the world whether it’s political issues or entertainment news.

Earlier this month, Jennifer Lawrence openly joined Lena Dunham in penning an open letter about the undeserving respect women get in the workforce. While she’s not the first person to bring up the issue, her argument does make a good point about women having to be aggressive just to be equal to men.

Her open letter certainly sparked public advocacy from Hillary Clinton and Bradley Cooper via social media.

Hillary Clinton chose to acknowledge Lawrence’s point of view on Twitter when she said, “Brava, Jennifer. It’s hard to speak up against inequity and risk being unpopular — but equal pay matters for us all.”

Even Bradley Cooper supports his American Hustle co-star and told Reuters magazine that he was shocked to learn of Amy Adam’s pay for that particular movie.

Clinton and Cooper may be on board to support Lawrence, but it doesn’t mean all of the male actors she’s worked with stand behind her opinion. Jeremy Renner, another American Hustle co-star, doesn’t feel inclined to help actresses get the pay they deserve.

In an interview with Business Insider, Renner’s response to this issue was simply, “I don’t know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff.”

This is just one outcome of a good celebrity rant. There are other rants that can just lead to plain good ol’ backlash from social media in a matter of seconds. Just a few weeks ago, Matt Damon was faced with scrutiny for his advice for actors to keep their lives private, especially gay actors.

“…and sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play,” Damon said in an interview.

This only led to clarification on The Ellen DeGeneres Show saying, “I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they’re a mystery.”

If you’re looking for a good celeb rant to talk about, it’s not hard to find one. It happens far too often on TV and radio shows or on social media. Another minor controversy happened recently with Raven-Symoné. She admitted that she discriminates when it comes to people’s names. The childhood Cosby star said that a person could have great qualities but she wouldn’t hire someone with a name like Watermelondrea.

Needless to say, Twitter hens didn’t wait a single second to bust her on that remark. Despite the outcry, it took her own father calling her out in public for Raven-Symoné to issue an apology for her remarks.

For better or worse, Celebrity rants aren’t going away anytime soon. Some celebrities have interesting things to say. And some don’t. It’s all part of the game. All we can do is sit back and watch the spectacle unfold.
