Photo of the Day: The Golden Hour

BreakingModern — I’ve discussed before how timing and lighting can make a difference in certain smartphone photographs. If the lighting isn’t just right or you click the shutter too late, your shot won’t come out as you expected. Professional photographers take these into consideration and often try to work with the phenomenon known as the “golden hour.” This is generally the optimal time to capture photos in nature as the lighting conditions are perfect for photography. HTC fanatic David Guija grabbed this photo-op by the horns and captured a beautiful golden hour photo with his HTC One M8.

I’m a sucker for cool silhouette photos, and this photo grabbed me right away. Guija frames this shot beautifully — the horizon line is perfectly encapsulated and the photo illustrates a really rich color gradient from the fading sun. The photographer focused on the distant horizon and sea, which makes the foreground cliffs appear as a silhouette. Even though the silhouette isn’t the focal point, the objects are still clearly detailed and don’t have any blur. This is a tough shot to grab.
