Fandango Movies: App Review

BreakingModern — One of the benefits of living in the mobile digital age is finding and paying for stuff without having to stand in long lines or make change. This benefit is particularly useful when it comes to choosing and paying for a movie ticket, especially if you use the convenient Fandango Movies app.

Let’s All Go To the Movies

The Fandango Movies app is available for Android, Apple iOS and Windows Phone, but I am reviewing the Android version, which is available on Google Play. All versions are free.

The mission of the Fandango Movies app is to simplify the purchase of movie tickets. To accomplish this mission, you’re going to have to provide the app with some personal information, in particular access to your location data.

With your location, the app can suggest movies showing at theaters in close proximity to where you are at any particular moment. This comes in handy when you’re on the move and trying to find the best time and place for a movie with your friends and family.

You can search for specific movies or you can search theaters around town. The opening movies this week are The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Straight Outta Compton. Consequently, those movies are prominently promoted on just about every screen in the app. I’m in the mood for a summer action movie so I think I’ll check out the offerings at the nearest IMAX screen.

Not Completely Free

This is where the Fandango Movies app really shines. Once you find a movie you want to see, showing at a theater and at a time you want to see it, you can order tickets right then and there. For the IMAX theater I am looking at, I can even reserve my seats.

With the Fandango Movies app, you don’t have to worry about getting there early so you can stake out the best seats. You don’t have to leave your younger brother in the theater to hold on to those seats by strewing coats across chair backs. All of the “this seat is taken” awkwardness is eliminated. I like this very much. Minimizing life’s little annoyances is one of the keys to happiness and long life.

However, all of this convenience does come at a price. For each ticket purchase made with the Fandango Movies app you will be charged a $2.00 convenience fee. And, while two bucks is not likely to break anyone’s entertainment budget, it is an extra expense that you could avoid if you choose to get your tickets the old-fashioned way — at the theater.

If you are seeing a blockbuster movie on opening weekend, you can save yourself a lot of hassle by using the Fandango Movies app. I am willing to pay $2 to avoid life’s little annoyances. I bet you will too.
