Four Tips for College Freshmen

BreakingModern — It’s almost back to school time. And for those of you who are entering college for the first time, you’re about to embark on the best four years of your … oh, who am I kidding? Always Register Early for Classes

Seriously, if you want a particular class, you’ve got to be speedy. College works on a first-come, first-served basis, and freshmen are usually the last ones to pick. That’s why you have to grab classes quickly, since most of them fill up very fast.

Don’t Join Too Many Clubs

If you’re like me you’ll be tempted to join every club that piques your interest. I was grabbing clubs like food at a Chinese buffet. But then I realized how busy I was with actual schoolwork. I didn’t have time for a lot of extracurricular activities. The clubs in college aren’t like the clubs in high school. In other words, nobody is joining a club to boost their resume. It’s just something people do for fun (although, some clubs serve free food during meetings). That’s always a bonus for starving college students.

Get Along With Your RA

Your Resident Assistant (RA) is basically the policeman of the dorm. He can either be your best friend or your worst enemy depending on how you behave. Don’t be the guy who’s partying during quiet hours or gets overly drunk in the halls, because if your RA catches you, it’s lights out.

Never Pick an 8 a.m. Class

No matter what you do (except under the most extreme circumstances), don’t register for an 8 a.m. class. This is an absolute death sentence. College is not like high school, there is far more homework. And you’ll being staying up late getting it done. Unless you’re a robot, you can’t stay up late and get up super early. You’ll burn out quickly. The earliest class I took was at 9:40 in the morning. And believe me, it took all my energy to simply crawl out of bed.

And that’s it – four essential tips for college freshmen. If you have any guidelines of your own, feel free to add them to the comments below. I may be a savvy sophomore, but I appreciate all the help I can get.
