Global Assault (review)

BreakingModern – “Havoc deploy! Move the javelin to the right! The base is under attack!”

If dialog like this makes you think of an awesome strategy game, you would be correct. You might be surprised, however, to discover that this particular video game was designed by Kongregate, the giant online game-hosting site.

Global Assault

That’s right, the website that hosts a slew of excellent games has joined the mobile gaming industry with its new addition, Global Assault. Is Kongregate diving into a pool of newfound opportunities, or is it dying like fish out of water? Let’s find out.

Global Assault is a turn-based strategy/RPG. There are two bases (comprising you and your opponent), and you deploy troops along four different lanes in an attempt to destroy all your opponent’s troops, or to destroy their base. With every turn you can deploy one troop or vehicle. And with every turn (except the initial deployment) they attack.

Global Assault

Since both sides contain the same basic roster, Global Assault requires chess-like strategy. In other words: players must move their units around the battlefield until they find the right opportunity to attack.

After experiencing the epic 3D graphics and the Risk-like game board, I have to say that Kongregate did a good job with Global Assault. In addition, the game also has a cool RPG-like element to it, as the player can choose to upgrade his or her units.

Upgrades give the player an advantage in battle because they improve performances. The player also has the option of fusing two of his or her units together into stronger units. In this way the game sort of mimics a tech tree.

This is a fairly brilliant job on Kongregate’s part to fuse turn-based strategy with RPG elements. Even though (as mentioned earlier) the strategy in turn-based systems often trick opponents into thinking they’re playing chess, the upgrading system lets players gain an advantage by strengthening their units and adding another dimension to the game.

If all this may seem daunting at first, rest assured the game starts out relatively easy. The AI doesn’t really put up much of a fight early on, but it gets increasingly harder as the game progresses. Also, as you go further into the game, the locations where you fight change. This creates a plethora of environments to fight in and helps minimize the game’s repetitive nature.

Global Assault

Global Assault has an awesome multiplayer mode that pairs a single player with other players from around the globe. Players can also join guilds, which function as alliances and give certain perks to its members. Perks can include faster upgrade times and more credits from battles. In turn, successful players can increase the rank and prestige of a guild by building up its members.

Overall, I would give Global Assault an 8/10. This is an epic game; it combines the simplicity of a classic turn-based game, with the cool features of a conventional RPG. I truly hope Kongregate plans to release more successful games in the future. Global Assault is free to download for Android on Google Play and Apple iOS, and I highly recommend it to any turn-based strategy gamers looking for something new.
