Gyro for Android: Daily App Pick

BreakingModern — My Android app pick for today is one of the more interesting and engaging arcade puzzle games I’ve played in a while. It’s called Gyro. Two guys at Submachine Factory are the developers of this fun little diddy. The concept is fairly simple, but don’t let that turn you away from the game. Simple is good, simple is intuitive. Embrace the simple. Trust me, simple gets really hard.

Gyro in a (Brain) Nutshell

You have a tri-color wheel in the middle of the screen. You can control the wheel with the slider bar or by turning it on the screen. Throw in some colored balls that match the color of the wheel. Turn the wheel to match the color of the ball and watch as the wheel absorbs the hit.

If a red ball hits the blue part of the wheel, you lose life. Simple, right? There are power ups and the speed increases as multiple colored balls start diving toward your little circle dial thing. Faster and faster from every direction, until it’s complete insanity.

Welcome To Gyro

Well, Gyro’s as insane as a cool arcade puzzle game can get. It’s a great game if you have 10 or 15 minutes to kill and want your brain to work while it waits. Once your hungry, pattern recognizing brain gets into the groove matching up colored balls to color panels on the wheel becomes addictive. There’s no turning back. You are instantly dissolved into a world where you are the wheel and you must absorb your balls back into your awesomely colored and circular body. Be the hero, save the day.

Gyro Blue Balls

Actually, there’s not really a day to save. There’s no hero, either — it’s just a fun puzzle game.

Try to beat your own high score, or if you login with Swarm, try to beat everyone else. Submachine Factory has also added a couple of different game modes to unlock. Of course, that option is in the paid model of the app, so you can either enter the Gyro Market and buy the Ultimate pack for $1.29 on Google Play (that price is as of the writing of this review), or skate on by for free.

Gyro Ultimate Pack

That’s actually a good deal if you like the game and want to remove the ads, unlock the different color schemes and master the Time Attack and Hardcore modes. There are in-game challenges you can attempt too.

You could also unlock the game modes for free via Tapjoy — i.e., sharing and liking the app on Facebook, rating the game, inviting people to the game via email and other social methods. Personally, I’m a fan of the method at the bottom: do 50 push-ups. Can I send in a video or what?

Gyro is available for Android on Google Play. You can also check out the old game trailer here on the Submachine Factory YouTube channel.
