HTC Esports Supports League of Legends Teams

BreakingModern — Last month HTC announced an official sponsorship of three League of Legends (LoL) teams: Cloud 9gg, LiquidPro and SoloMid. This sponsorship plunges HTC into the realm of Esports.

For those who don’t know, League of Legends is an online cooperative battle arena game that pits two teams, of five people each, against one another. Each player picks from over 123 different champions, each with unique abilities, and then the teams duke it out for dominance.

The Esports industry is growing rapidly with over 27 million people playing LoL per day and a World Championship whose 2014 pot sat at $2.3 million.

On to the teams:

Cloud 9gg

Cloud 9gg is one of the most popular LoL teams in the world. It placed first in the IEM Season IX San Jose competition in December, 2014, taking home a pot of $25,000, and 5th-8th in the World Championship held in the fall of 2014. One of its star players is Sneaky.

Team LiquidPro

This team, based in North America, has struggled some in the most-recent tournaments but remains one of the most popular in LoL play. As part of HTC’s sponsorship, the video below was made to document the struggles and hopeful triumph of Team LiquidPro. Its star player is Piglet, one of the best players in the world.

Team SoloMid

Team SoloMid, often referred to as TSM, is a dynamite group from North America. At the time of this writing, the team holds first place in the NA LCS, a major North American tournament.

The HTC sponsorship laid out in January promised an in-depth video series, like the one above, and various giveaways for dedicated fans. This further cements HTC’s role in the Esports world as one of the first major tech companies to get seriously involved.
