Injustice: Gods Among Us [review]

BreakingModernInjustice: Gods Among Us is an epic fighting game set in the DC Universe. No equivocation: It is one of the best fighting games I’ve ever seen and played.

Injustice

The game takes place in an alternate dimension where the Joker tricks Superman into killing both Lois Lane and his unborn child. Superman is also tricked into blowing up Metropolis. Angered by this, the Man of Steel kills the Joker and builds an iron dictatorship free of crime called the One Republic. With the Joker unhinged and Superman on a rampage, Batman conscripts a bunch of heroes from an alt-universe to help save the day.

It’s complicated, I’ll admit. It took me a third of the way into the game before I figured out what was going on. The alternate universe is a good premise, but I found the storyline to be extremely confusing at times. Frequently you will be fighting your alt-universe proxy.

The campaign itself is divided into 15 chapters, each having its own playable character fighting in multiple fights. The campaign also has awesome streamlined cut scenes and cool quick time events that actually affect future events. Some people might have a problem with Superman being an evil dictator and ruling with an iron fist, but I like the idea. It allows players to see the moral complications inherent in god-like creatures.

Injustice

Injustice: Gods Among Us also has a cool single player mode called Classic Mode. As the name suggests, it’s the classic mode in most fighting games whereby the player will fight through a series of enemies and experience a unique ending for each character.

While almost every character has a unique play style, there aren’t any fatalities as in Mortal Kombat. Injustice: Gods Among Us also lacks the blood and gore that so many have been used to in the Mortal Kombat series.

Each character also has his or her unique special move, and those are absolutely awesome. My favorite has to be Batman. He’s able to throw a smoke bomb, taser his opponent and run him over with his batmobile. You can even interact with the environment and knock opponents into other layers of the stage and even grabbing parts of the stage to throw at your opponents. As you’d expect, the graphics in Injustice: Gods Among Us are terrific. The characters look great while pummeling each other.

Along with its cool single player modes, Injustice: Gods Among Us also has an awesome array of multiplayer modes. In online battles players can battle each other in ranked matches, private matches and player matches. As with any online feature, there are leaderboards that show off the best of the best in the world.

Overall, Injustice: Gods Among Us deserves a full 10/10. This game is simply extraordinary. Although confusing at times, the campaign is great and the fighting mechanics are just awesome. To its credit, the game doesn’t go too far in a Mortal Kombat direction. Rather, it focuses more on action than blood and gore. And for all the people who love reading comic books, Injustice: Gods Among Us honors all the DC legacy characters. The game is available on multiple platforms, including PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U and the Xbox 360.
