Rocket League [review]

BreakingModern – Remote Control (RC) cars playing soccer – that pretty much describes Rocket League. It’s a simple, motorized football game. And it’s extremely good.

Rocket League

The main game mode in Rocket League pits two teams (red and blue) against each other in a single, quick match. You simply try to score inside the other team’s goal. The rules are similar to football, only there are no handballs (cars don’t have hands), fouls or out of bounds (the playing field is enclosed inside a dome).

The walls of the dome serve as a strategic barrier. The player can bounce the ball off the wall. Even better, a player can drive the force field. Yes, you heard me correctly. You can drive on the walls (and roof!) to boost your advantage. Aerial attacks are an important part of the game as many a great shot has been caused by the player flying up to knock a flying ball right into the opponent’s goal. And with no goalies, these types of goals become more important than ever.

Gameplay aside, there’s also cool customizable options in the game. You can repaint your car various styles and patterns and even pick a country flag as adornment. Rocket League includes all 200 recognized countries in the world, so pick any flag you want to proudly display on your car.

The gameplay can be very repetitive so I would recommend playing Rocket League with a friend. Be forewarned, however: The multiplayer option is good, but the sheer amount of traffic the game gets can bog things down a bit. On the upside, the graphics are awesome. Each match comes alive like a supercharged Michael Bay movie.

Overall I would give Rocket League a 9/10. This is a very playable game with great graphics, cool mechanics and a downright awesome concept. Rocket League is available for the PS4 and the PC and I highly recommend buying it. It’s only $20 and worth every penny for you gamers.
