Madden NFL Mobile [review]

BreakingModern — I love Madden NFL, but to be honest the series has suffered its ups and downs over the years. Now the game has moved to a mobile platform. How does this new mobile game compare to the console version? Let’s find out.

Instead of two teams playing full games of four quarters, Madden NFL Mobile allows you to challenge a team and then alternate offensive possessions. This goes on until one team wins.

There are some advantages and disadvantages to this head-to-head game mode. On the plus side, it allows players who aren’t online at the moment to go against one another. This makes for a lot more flexibility. And, yes, if you’re wondering: you can actually pause the game. I swear this is the first game I’ve seen (mobile, console or PC) where a multiplayer gaming environment can be paused.

However, the downside is that you can only play offense. There are no strategic, chess-like maneuvers available to counter your opponent’s offensive plays with defensive schemes of your own. Instead you face a pre-selected defense, which in my opinion takes away the whole purpose of multiplayer. Shouldn’t you be playing against other players, hence the term multi-player?

The graphics and mechanics of Madden NFL Mobile are stellar. Even though this is a mobile game, the graphics look like they belong in the console version. The tackles and skill moves are extremely realistic. And the touchdown celebrations are terrific. In any football game, there’s nothing better than an epic touchdown celebration — from the outlandish ones in Blitz: The League to more subtle ones. When you score in a Madden game, you don’t just walk back to the bench like you’re in church. You’ve got to celebrate! And these celebrations are awesome (especially the famous Tebowing).

Overall, I would give Madden NFL Mobile an 8/10. It’s a great game with realistic graphics, a cool season mode and a pause-able multiplayer mode. The fact that you can’t go player vs. player in real time is kind of disappointing. And I would have liked the opportunity to schedule exhibition games. But otherwise, I highly recommend this game (especially for people who can’t afford the console version). Madden NFL Mobile is free to download for Android on Google Play and Apple iOS.
